Why We Built a Comfort Index
Most jewellery brands optimize for how a piece looks in a photo. We started by asking a different question: what does this feel like at hour eight, in humidity, against real skin?
That question doesn't have a single answer — comfort is made up of several factors working together. So instead of a vague "gentle on skin" label, we broke it down into something measurable.
What the Comfort Index Actually Measures
Every Ashaarya piece is scored across four dimensions:
1. Weight Heavier pieces pull on ears and necks over a full day. We weigh every design and score it against a comfort threshold for its category — a stud earring and a statement cuff aren't held to the same bar, but each has one.
2. Skin Contact & Materials This is where anti-tarnish and hypoallergenic properties come in. We test for nickel content and finish durability, because tarnishing isn't just a cosmetic issue — the metals that flake or discolor fastest are often the same ones that irritate skin.
3. All-Day Wearability This is the composite score: could you reasonably keep this on from your morning commute to dinner, without needing to take it off? It's the number that ties the other three together.
Each dimension is scored, and the piece gets an overall Comfort Index rating you'll see listed on every product page.
What This Means for You, Practically
- A high Comfort Index score means you can wear the piece to work, sleep in it if you choose to, and not think about it again until you want to change your look.

A Note on Expectations
No jewellery is entirely maintenance-free, and comfort is still partly personal — what feels effortless for one person may feel slightly different for another depending on skin sensitivity or piercing type. The Comfort Index is our attempt to give you an honest, consistent baseline, not a guarantee that overrides your own body's feedback.

Is the Comfort Index the same as "hypoallergenic"? Not exactly — hypoallergenic speaks to material safety alone. The Comfort Index includes that, but also weight, fit, and how the piece performs over a full day of wear.
Does a lower Comfort Index score mean a piece is low quality? No. Some statement pieces are intentionally heavier by design, and we still rate them honestly rather than inflate the score — the rating is about the wear experience, not overall craftsmanship.
How is the Comfort Index tested? Through a combination of material testing (for tarnish resistance and skin safety) and real-wear trials across a full day, repeated across multiple wearers before a piece is scored.
